"Family Dinner"

Today was pretty casual day here in Aalborg. I did not have class so Rachel and I went shopping. On our lists were skinny jeans and boots. EVERYONE here has AMAZING skinny jeans and wears them with great boots or wicked sneakers. So we decided we would purchase these items to blend in. Unfortunately, our mission failed. Neither of us found jeans or boots but we did find other interesting things along the way. I did see a great cardigan (Mr. Rogers Style) in purple, a tee shirt with an asymmetrical line design and a flirty blue top. But alas I bought none of them. I instead chose to save my money for traveling. In the process of our shopping marathon we walked all over the city of Aalborg. By the end of the day I was dragging. We decided to grab a snack from a hot dog stand. While we were sitting on a bench eating, I looked up and across the street in a sandwich shop were four of our american comrades waving like crazy people. It was quite hilarious. Apparently, they had been watching us and waving for two minutes and we were so hungry we did not even notice. After a short talk we went on our way to the bus station where we were going to pick up Oreck, Rachel's boyfriend, who was coming to visit.

While we were killing time in the mall attached to the bus station we wandered into a grocery store. There I found a few of things I had been searching for: pancake mix and cake mix. Our rooms have full stoves so I have been dying to bake and finally I found cake mix. I also found danish sprinkles! Out of shear joy I almost bought them but they were too expensive and a strange mix of colors. To my dismay there is no funfetti cake mix here. This saddens me greatly because as many of my dear friends know, I love to make funfetti cupcakes!

Me and my Halloween Funfetti cupcakes!

I did however buy chocolate cake mix and cinnamon roll mix. I intend to breakfast for my fellow Limfjordskollegians with my newly purchased pancake mix, cinnamon rolls, and some good old bacon and eggs.

Cooking has become a big theme. We do not go out to eat too often, mostly we cook at home. In fact food has been my biggest expense so far. To negate this we have started a so called family dinner. In this dinner one person cooks for the whole group and every on takes a turn. People can contribute money, ingredients,  assistance, or just come eat. Everyone will get a turn so it is fair. Gracie made wonderful pasta, harold made great mini pizzas, and tonight Rachel and Oreck made pasta and Fikadeller (danish meatballs). It was delicious! My contribution to the meal was chocolate cake! We borrowed a cake pan and it was a semi group effort to bake it. It turned out wonderfully.  We also watched the office while we had cake, delicious! We then finished off the night with a lively debate about whether my pants were black or blue. The truth is they are dark BLUE jeans. They are so dark that they may appear black in certain light but they are NOT in fact black.

The night Gracie made pasta. From Left to right Morgan, Harold, Jake Aaron, and Me. Only Harold lives at Limfjord with me. Gracie was very generous and invited many people over when it was her night to cook.

This week I have class tomorrow which is Friday which is a bummer. I still have reading to do so I must go!

  1. Aaaah this is SO CUTE! It sounds like you are having such a blast, I am so happy for you!

And about the clothes, people in england are the same way! I look like a hobo compared to the stylish people here! I have bought some clothes but I'm also trying to save for travel but it's hard when cute clothes are begging you to buy them from the windows or every shop!
